Going Without, going within

This is the story of my personal Odyssey. I grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois, in a beautiful historic home, designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. When I was eight, my Mom gave me the permission to paint an old tool shed in the backyard of the house. I called it "The River Nile." It was a special private place of my own.
Presently I live in a 12’x 16’ room in a building that used to be a Catholic convent. After being homeless, I love the small space I dwell in. During this time of forced reflection, I have an opportunity to look at my past mistakes and my significant accomplishments. I hope to use photography to find some answers, by searching my past and to frame the present.
The year before we moved from my childhood home to Oak Park, I won the Arbor Day tree poster contest during 5th grade. First place was a pine tree, this is that tree today.
From Stephanie:
" Over a period of time going all through this, I think I lost a lot of confidence in myself and self-esteem. I think by steadily building on my photography skills and going to school, I become more articulate to be able to write my own story in my own way. It has a good feeling for being able to start something, finish it, and present it, not quitting, which is a good indication that I am ready to move to the next level."
