AI Systems & Silicon | Computer Architecture | Machine Learning Systems

I am a Partner Director of AI Systems & Silicon at Microsoft, where I work on the architecture and hardware–software co-design of Azure Maia, Microsoft's custom AI accelerators for large-scale machine learning workloads.

My work focuses on making AI systems more efficient by connecting advances in machine learning algorithms, numerical representations, computer architecture, and silicon implementation. My research interests include low-precision computation, model quantization and compression, efficient LLM inference, accelerator microarchitecture, and the co-design of hardware and software for emerging AI workloads.

Over the course of my career, I have worked across research, architecture, and product development at Microsoft, Tenstorrent, Arm, and Broadcom. My experience spans AI accelerator design, machine learning systems, embedded computing, and system-on-chip architectures, with an emphasis on translating research ideas into practical, production-oriented technologies.

Before joining Microsoft, I worked on AI accelerator architectures at Tenstorrent and led machine learning research at Arm, contributing to technologies for efficient neural network execution. Earlier in my career, I worked on system-on-chip development at Broadcom.

I hold a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in System-on-Chip Design from the University of Edinburgh.

I am an inventor on multiple patents covering computer architecture, numerical computing, machine learning acceleration, and related technologies. My broader research interests centre on the evolving relationship between AI models, computing systems, and specialised silicon, particularly how algorithmic and architectural innovations can enable more capable and efficient AI at scale.
