DAVID VINEY - PRESS KIT

David Viney spends his working life moving between two worlds that rarely talk to each other: the boardroom deciding whether to bet on AI, and the civil society sector asking who gets left behind when that bet goes wrong!

For 25 years he's built and run enterprise technology inside organisations most people have heard of — WPP, Heathrow, the BBC, Arup, BSI. At WPP he led the build of WPP Open, a £250m agentic AI platform now running across the group. At Arup, a world-first IoT deployment on the Forth Road Bridge became the template for a $200m global industry. He holds professional qualifications in both technology (CITP) and finance (ACA) — a combination that means his advice tends to survive contact with a CFO, not just a whiteboard.

He's also spent over twenty years writing about what he's building. His 2005 book on enterprise technology delivery produced a framework — the J-Curve of Change — that outgrew the book itself, now cited across construction, healthcare, and agile practice, and more recently picked up by the Tony Blair Institute and Pender Fund in their work on AI adoption. His monthly Catalyst newsletter reaches 700+ subscribers including CIOs, board members, and policymakers. His commentary has run in Computer Weekly, TechTarget, Yahoo Finance, and Moneywise, among others.

What makes him a useful source rather than just another vendor voice: a decade-plus as a civil society board trustee, currently Treasurer at Article 19 (freedom of expression) and previously at Privacy International, working the post-Snowden fight against state and corporate data overreach. He sits on the AI Governance Standards board (AIGAS), working the practical translation of ISO 42001 and the EU AI Act into things organisations can actually do. He's not selling AI. He's trying to make sure it's governed by people who've spent real time on both sides of the argument.

For journalists: available for comment on AI governance, responsible transformation, digital leadership, and the practical cost of getting AI adoption wrong — with the independence that comes from not needing the AI hype cycle to be true.
