From the Parker Inn around the 1900s this building was a prestigious temporary stop for those who love the entertainment business. It was built by Mr. John R. Parker in 1905. Patrons would visit shows at the Proctor. Eat delicacies on the Jay Street Pedestrian Walkway Mall. Shop around downtown Schenectady, New York, which was also very attractive. The building took an economic hit and was restored in 2019. Since then the demand to fill daily vacancies has not been seen due to the effects from COVID-19. A new intent arose from the pandemic crisis to now house women, men, and families who otherwise do not quite qualify for funding from the Department of Social Services (DSS). Schenectady, New York does not have a Department for Homeless Services (DHS) and we thought to first provide evidence supporting the need of such a state agency, i.e. to house the homeless population. Our goal since February 2024 is to see a 5% decrease in homelessness over the next five years as result of the Parker Wells Way Shelter(s) in Schenectady City and County.
Unfortunately, the Parker Inn hotel is no longer in operation. It has been converted into a full housing unit for the single female homeless population. The facility is now operating under the name, Parker Wells Women's Shelter officially since May 8th, 2024. It is one of three shelters aiding in combating homelessness in Schenectady City and County. The other shelters are the Parker Wells Men's Shelter and the Parker Wells Family Shelter scheduled to open for housing late September 2024.
