Taking a Look at Empathy
Taking a Look at Empathy
Empathy is a word that means that someone is able to share and understand the emotions and feelings of another person.
After watching this video clip, can you think of a time you have felt empathy for someone else? Describe a time you felt happy or sad because you could sense the feelings another person was experiencing.
A New Student in Class
Please watch the video about Josh, a new student in class. Social Awareness involves identifying how others might feel in a particular situation. Perhaps it's because you were once in that person's "shoes" and remember the feeling. You might also remember particular details about how others responded or helped you through the experience. What do you think it means to be anxious or nervous? Why do you think Josh is so anxious? What could you do if you were in Josh's class so that he doesn't feel so anxious about fitting in?
Empathy for a Classmate
An important part of social awareness is the ability to empathize with others. Empathy involves putting yourself in someone else's shoes and thinking about how that person might be feeling. Watch the video below about Lizzy then answer the following reflection questions. Lizzy studied hard for her math test late into the night, but then she overslept and didn't do well on the test. If you were in Lizzy's shoes, how would you feel? How can Lizzy's classmates show her empathy? What might Lizzy do differently next time so she can get a better score on her test?
