Having a Difficult Conversation with a Friend
Having a Difficult Conversation with a Friend
Sometimes conflict or disagreements are part of a friendship. It doesn't mean the friendship is over though. Handling conflict in a healthy and productive way and being honest with your friend are both key ingredients to a long-lasting friendship. Please watch the video below about James and think about the Reflection Questions. What do you think is the most important quality for a successful friendship? Why do you think James' friends get annoyed with him? Can you think of a time when you had to have a difficult conversation with a close friend? Share how it went with us!
What is Teamwork?
Teamwork involves working together with others to reach an end goal. Watch the video below to see different examples of a team working together to accomplish a common goal. Being a part of a team (or a group) might include the use of important skills such as offering and receiving help, taking turns, showing fairness, and contributing towards the achievement of the goal. Every member of the team has an important role. Think about a time you were a member of a team or a group. What was your common goal? How did you work together as a team to accomplish the goal? Was it easy or hard to work as a team?
Resolving Conflict
Sometimes we get angry, frustrated or disagree with a choice someone else has made. How we handle this disagreement (or conflict) is important to the relationships we have with others. It's okay to feel these upset emotions, but it's important to handle the situation in a way that is calm and safe. Please watch the video below to learn more about conflict resolution.
In the video, Tim was frustrated with Moby, but before addressing his frustration, he recognized what he was feeling, calmed himself down (deep breaths, count to 10), explained how he felt using an I-statement (I feel grossed out when you use my toothbrush....) and listened to Moby's side of the situation. Then they were able to come up with a compromise and the solution was a win-win. Can you think of an example of a conflict situation you had to solve recently? Think of what your I-statement (I feel...when...) would have been and share it with us! Were you able to come to a compromise?
