Remember that the dorms open at noon on July 1. If you are arriving in Paris before July 1, here are some hotel suggestions.
Paris has many hotels from small, family-run establishments to palaces like the Ritz and include all the usual chain brands. On the whole, you will find reasonable small hotels in Paris compared to large American cities and London, for example. You can still book a small, clean room with bath near the Odeon for about $150-200. Trivago.com is a good site to check. If you venture to an area just south of the Luxembourg, for example at Alesia, you will find hotels a little less expensive. The latter is in the 14th district.
Based on our experience, here are a few hotels near the Odéon, within a block or two of both dorms:
Grand Hôtel des Balcons, a modest, friendly hotel at 3 rue Casimir Delavigne, with rooms bookable online for $200. Check Trivago for the best price. You can add in a good breakfast buffet, too. This hotel is a favorite with ESA alums for its friendly staff and proximity to the Condé dorm.
Hôtel Michelet-Odéon, next to the theater, about the same prices as the Grand Hotel des Balcons.
Hôtel Delavigne, next to the Balcons, is about $60 more, but offers air conditioned rooms and a friendly place.
Relais Médicis, right next to the Odéon Theater on rue Racine, is more expensive but a good value for the luxury.
Other hotels for wider travels:
French hotel chains include the Accor chain with brands such as Ibis (cheapest brand), Novotel, Mercure and Sofitel. Rooms tend to be small.
There is another, more interesting French hotel and inn group, Logis de France, if you plan to travel around the country. Each one is locally-owned and run and usually reflects the culture and architecture of the region in which it is located. Usually, these hotels are reasonably priced and offer good restaurants, too.
Dorm stays in August can often be found at the Foyer international, 93 blvd St-Michel, by the Luxembourg metro.
