One component of the Science Communication track of the Professional Writing Minor at UCSB is the completion of a capstone project. For my capstone project, I created a series of profiles of undergraduate researchers at UCSB. I shared these profiles through two genres: an Instagram account and transcripts posted to a website.
I welcome you to explore these resources yourself.
The purpose of these profiles is to reach undergraduates at UCSB interested in scientific research and provide them with information and advice from older students. The interviews humanize the research process while conveying some of the scientific content of undergraduates’ work. By sharing the voices of current undergraduates, I give younger students the chance to see a throughline from interested in research, to finding a position, to engaging in work with faculty. Allowing research assistants to speak about their projects creates a vivid picture of what this work actually entails.
