About Us

Using the National Safe Routes to School (http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/) movement as a catalyst, Parents for Safe Routes is a group of dedicated parents and neighbors committed to making Menlo Park schools (and schools attended by children who live in Menlo Park) as walkable and bikeable as possible. For a more detailed description of our group click here or see below. While individual parents and specific schools have made some progress on improving the safety in our community, by working together we can have a collective voice.

Our group leads the push for Safe Routes among community members. We keep our City and Schools (and other related agencies) focused on Safe Routes. Parents for Safe Routes has a leadership role to play within each of the 6 nationally established E’s of Safe Routes:

  • Engineering - Identify infrastructure gaps and lobby the City to make necessary street improvements to ensure the safest and most stress-free routes possible.
  • Enforcement - Notify law enforcement about areas in which traffic violations are regularly occurring. Remind parents and community members about speed limits and traffic laws.
  • Education - Assist Schools in bike training for children and families (i.e., bike rodeos).
  • Encouragement - Help Schools organize bike and walk to school events.
  • Evaluation - Collect data to track walking and biking to school and to measure the effectiveness of various programs. Also help conduct walking and biking audits to rate the safety level of specific routes.
  • Equity - Ensure that resources and effort allocated to Safe Routes is done fairly across schools and across areas in which the kids of Menlo Park live.

Our leadership team includes:

  • Jen Wolosin - Chair (Laurel)
  • Lydia Lee - Vice Chair (Encinal and Hillview)
  • Katie Behroozi - Parent Coordinator (Oak Knoll)
  • Ruchi Murlidhar - Parent Coordinator (Laurel)
  • Marijane Leonard - Parent Coordinator (Encinal)
  • More to come! Please contact us if you are interested in serving as a Parent Coordinator at a different Menlo Park school!
