Octaverse is an innovative mobile app that seeks to revolutionize the music industry by providing a platform tailored specifically for musicians. The app's core functionality is centered around connecting musicians with like-minded artists, enabling networking, collaboration, and the sharing of music and announcements on a social media-style feed.
User Research: Through rigorous qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, I sought to gain a comprehensive understanding of musicians' backgrounds, identify the specific challenges they face, and develop tailored strategies to convert these challenges into avenues for advancement. My research approach was carefully designed to ensure that the solutions we propose not only address the data-driven pain points but also resonate with the real experiences and aspirations of musicians. This holistic methodology aims to equip musicians with the tools and support needed to excel in their careers and contribute to the enrichment of the broader musical landscape.
KEY FINDINGS:
Musicians expressed the need for a dedicated platform to find like-minded artists for collaborations.
Many musicians struggled to connect with others in the industry, especially in remote areas.
There was a strong desire for a user-friendly app that simplifies networking, showcases music, and facilitates crowdfunding campaigns.
Lack of guidance and resources was a major frustration for independent musicians.
Musicians emphasized the importance of a supportive community for sharing ideas and seeking mentorship.
Q. How frequently do you engage in music collaborations with other artists?
Q. On a scale of 1 to 5, how satisfied are you with your current methods of finding potential bandmates or collaborators?
Q. Have you ever faced challenges in connecting with other musicians due to your geographical location?
Q. How likely are you to use an app that specifically caters to networking and collaboration for musicians?
Q. Are you interested in seeking crowdfunding opportunities to support your music projects?
KEY FINDINGS:
A certain percentage of musicians faced challenges in finding suitable bandmates for live performances.
A specific percentage of musicians desired access to artist managers to advance their music careers.
The survey indicated a percentage of musicians expressing difficulty in networking and finding collaboration opportunities.
A notable percentage of musicians expressed interest in crowdfunding to finance their music projects.
Before embarking on the design process, I conducted a competitive audit to understand existing music-related apps and platforms. This audit helped identify their strengths and weaknesses, allowing us to focus on unique features that set Octaverse apart.
Personas & Empathy Maps: Based on our user research, I identified two primary personas that emerged from our target audience. To truly understand and empathize with these personas, I created empathy maps that delved into their thoughts, feelings, goals, and pain points. This approach allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of their unique needs and challenges, enabling me to develop solutions that are more tailored and effective.
Information Architecture: Information architecture refers to the structure and organization of information within an app or website, enabling users to find and interact with content intuitively. In the case of Octaverse, designing an effective information architecture was paramount to provide musicians with easy access to networking features, collaboration opportunities, and crowdfunding functionalities.
Wireframes: Wireframes were developed to create a blueprint of Octaverse's interface, ensuring a seamless user flow and intuitive navigation. Collaborative feedback sessions with the team and potential users helped refine the wireframes.
Prototype: With wireframes in place, the next step was to create interactive prototypes of the app using user-friendly design tools. These prototypes underwent multiple iterations to validate and improve the user experience.
Style Guide:
Usability Testing: During Octaverse app development, usability testing ensured a user-friendly experience. Real musicians performed tasks like finding collaborators, customizing profiles, and initiating crowdfunding campaigns. Observations, think-aloud comments, and post-task interviews provided insights.
Findings & Improvements:
Navigation: Clearer labels needed for seamless navigation.
Matchmaking: Algorithm liked, customization options desired.
Profile: Customization easy; interest in video samples.
Crowdfunding: Intuitive process; more guidance requested.
Iterative Design:
Feedback drove iterative design, enhancing navigation, customization, and guidance. Octaverse evolved to meet musicians' networking, collaboration, and crowdfunding needs.
