This Privacy Policy explains how SmartCodies ("we", "us", or "our") handles information in connection with the PaperNote mobile application (the "App").
By installing or using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
PaperNote is designed to keep your writing on your own device.
We do not collect, transmit, or store your notes. Your notes, checklists, tables, drawings and photos are saved only in the App's private storage on your device.
We do not require an account. There is no sign-up, no login, and no cloud sync.
We do not operate servers that receive your content.
The App displays advertisements supplied by Google AdMob, and Google collects certain information for that purpose. This is the only routine flow of data out of the App, and it is described in Section 3.
The following is stored locally on your device, in storage that is private to the App. We cannot access it, and it is not transmitted to us or to any third party by the App.
What Where it is stored
Note text, checklists, tables and their contents
A private database file on your device
Photos you attach and drawings you create
The App's private internal storage folder
Which folder each note belongs to
The same private database file
Notes you have deleted, during their 30-day recovery period
The same private database file
App settings (theme, sort order, view mode, preview lines and similar preferences)
Private app preferences on your device
A salted cryptographic hash of your app passcode, if you set one
Private app preferences on your device
Your passcode itself is never stored. Only a salted hash is kept, which is used to check whether an entered passcode is correct.
Automatic backup is disabled for this App, so this data is not copied to Google Drive or any other backup service by Android.
The App displays advertisements through Google AdMob, a service provided by Google.
To serve, measure and improve advertising, Google may collect and process information such as:
your device's advertising identifier (Android Advertising ID);
IP address and approximate location derived from it;
device information such as model, operating system version and language;
information about the ads shown to you and how you interacted with them.
This information is collected by Google, not by us. We do not receive your notes, your photos, your name, your email address or your phone number through advertising, and we do not sell any personal information.
Google's handling of this data is governed by its own policies:
Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
Your choices. You can limit ad personalisation at any time from your device settings: Settings → Google → Ads, where you can reset your advertising ID or opt out of ad personalisation. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the App will ask for your consent before personalised ads are shown, and you may change or withdraw that choice.
The App offers voice input for searching and for dictating notes. When you use it, the App hands the request to the speech recognition service built into your device, which is usually provided by Google or by your device manufacturer.
The App does not record, store or transmit audio itself. Your speech is processed by that speech recognition service under its own privacy policy, and the App receives only the resulting text, which is then placed into your note or search box on your device.
If you prefer not to use this feature, simply do not tap the microphone button.
You may add photos to a note by choosing an existing image or by taking a new one. Both actions use your device's own system picker or camera app.
The App does not request permission to browse your photo library or to access the camera directly. Any image you add is copied into the App's private storage and stays on your device. Images are never uploaded.
You can lock individual notes. Unlocking uses your device's biometric or screen-lock authentication, or an app passcode if your device has neither set up.
Biometric data never leaves your device and is never available to the App. Authentication is performed entirely by Android, which tells the App only whether it succeeded or failed.
Please note that locking a note controls access through the App's interface. It is a privacy feature, not a guarantee of encryption against someone with full access to your unlocked device.
The App requests only the following permissions:
Internet access and network state — required to load advertisements. These are not used to transmit your notes or any other content you create.
Deleting a note moves it to Recently Deleted, where it remains for 30 days and can be restored. After 30 days it is permanently removed, along with any photos attached to it.
You may delete a note permanently at any time from the Recently Deleted screen.
Uninstalling the App permanently deletes all of its data from your device, including all notes, folders, photos, settings and any passcode hash. Because we never receive this data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
Data collected by Google for advertising is retained according to Google's own policies, linked in Section 3.
The App is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us at the address in Section 12 and we will take appropriate action.
Your notes are stored in storage that Android makes private to the App, so other apps on your device cannot read it. Passcodes are stored only as a salted hash, never in readable form.
No method of electronic storage is completely secure. We encourage you to protect your device with a screen lock and to keep your operating system up to date.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected in the App or in its store listing. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
