While this project was designed for preservice art educators as they transition to professional teaching, we recognize that this project can be used at many stages of transition.
Such as..

We encourage altering this project to what best fits the needs of your students.

The Art Education Program at UIUC determined a need to support and assess for Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in the development of a professional disposition. Therefore, we proposed an assessment research initiative based on two of our learning outcomes:
(9) building and maintaining collaborative relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development of their students
(10) exhibit ethical, reflective, and professional practices, while providing leadership in their educational settings and advocating for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
In addition, reflecting and navigating changing identities directly models important components of SEL, such as self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making.
In addition to SEL components, the biographical narrative method further grounds the design of this project. Specifically, we related our creation of self-identity to "life constructions" explored in the biographical narrative method for professional development by Shalev & Gildalevich (2004).
People build “life constructions” by organizing their past experiences or biographies to relate and explain their current life events. Those constructs and reflective thinking about them help people understand the current relations between themselves and the world and build self-coherence and identity” (Shalev & Gildalevich, 2004, p. 3)
Further, Shalev & Gildalevich (2004) outline the five objectives for the biographical narrative that heavily influenced the design of this project:
“(a) to develop personal self-knowledge;
(b) to promote the ability to analyze and criticize one’s various daily frameworks (family, school, media, religious and spiritual groups, cultural diversity, peer group and friends, leisure and free time, work);
(c) to relate their personal biography, family and local contexts, and their global social and cultural environments;
(d) to promote the learner’s personal involvement in the learning process; and
(e) to assist in the reflective review of personal difficulties, by creating resources to better manage conflicts and problems in daily life” (p. 3).
Throughout this project, we used the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching to guide our goals for this project.
