Percent ALT on Automated Pedagogies:
In my Latin classroom, students will spend about 30% of their time on automated pedagogy. I have a computer lab within my classroom and I have been using more technology due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I do utilize the available technology for delivering content when it is appropriate, such as on days when we learn a new cultural topic because I can use tools like Nearpod to immerse my students in the culture.
Types of Automated Pedagogies:
I will be using a blended-learning approach. Using tools such as Nearpod and Google Slides, students will complete activities online where they can research more information and go at their own pace, but I will still be in the classroom to circulate and assist as needed. I will also utilize tools such as Quizizz and Google Forms through which I can provide immediate feedback no matter when or where a student is completing the activity.
Percent ALT on Student-Centered Pedagogies:
Students will spend about 70% of their time on student-centered pedagogy. I believe that students need to develop their learning not just through automated learning but also by completing activities and assignments in which they apply their knowledge and skills in a broader sense. Students can collaborate with each other simultaneously or at different times of the day in class or from their own home.
Types of Student-Centered Pedagogies:
This will consist overwhelmingly of collaborative learning, since students must be able to communicate in a world language class, and because I prefer to have my students explore the language in small groups since collaborative instruction has been shown to be more beneficial for overall learning. As I progress on my personalized learning journey, I hope to also incorporate inquiry learning and other student-centered pedagogies, and I will encourage students to engage in authentic assessments of their choice to demonstrate their mastery.
Power and Agency:
To start out, I will be making the majority of educative decisions in my class. I will begin with smaller decisions such as the incorporation of choice boards so that my students have some voice and choice. As I progress in my learning, I will incorporate increasing student decision making and individualized paths in my classroom as appropriate given the restrictions of my school district in regard to grades and assignment types.
Other defining features: As my students improve upon learner agency, I plan to incorporate more voice and choice by allowing my students to delve into vocabulary and cultural topics not part of the current curriculum. I am bound by a textbook at the current moment, but I have students expressing interest in learning outside the scope of what we must do, so I am hoping to allow my students to further explore the broader topics of Latin and Roman Culture according to their interests. I will also incorporate dynamic communication by keeping students, parents, and administrators in the loop, and I will ensure that students have opportunities to initiate communication with myself, their peers, and others as needed.
