HISTORY OF BOLINAO
Bolinao has a rich historical background that dates back to pre-colonial times. It was originally inhabited by indigenous Aeta communities before being settled by Austronesian-speaking groups. Spanish colonizers arrived in the late 16th century and established Bolinao as a mission area under the Augustinian friars in 1575. Later, it was transferred to the Dominicans in 1585. The town played a role during the Philippine Revolution against Spain and later during the Philippine-American War. Bolinao's strategic location along the coastline made it a significant spot for maritime activities and local trade in the region. Today, its historical landmarks and cultural heritage continue to reflect its dynamic past.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The original name of Bolinao is believed to have been derived from the "boli-bolinao," a type of native fish found abundantly in the area. This name reflects the town's strong connection to the sea and its fishing traditions, which remain a vital aspect of the local economy and culture.
SPANISH ERA
In 1575, Spanish explorers arrived in Bolinao and established it as one of their missionary centers in northern Luzon. The arrival of Christianity marked a significant cultural shift. The St. James the Great Parish Church, built in 1609, stands as a testament to this period. Constructed using coral stones and strengthened by local labor, the church has witnessed key historical events, including uprisings and natural calamities. Bolinao's strategic location made it a crucial part of the Spanish trade route. The Spanish also introduced the Cape Bolinao Lighthouse, built in 1903 during the American colonial period, to guide ships navigating the West Philippine Sea.
WORLD WAR II AND POST-WAR ERA
During World War II, Bolinao was not spared from Japanese occupation. Local guerrillas played a significant role in resisting the invaders. After the war, the town gradually rebuilt itself, focusing on agriculture and fishing as its primary industries.
MODERN BOLINAO
Today, Bolinao is known for its unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Its historical landmarks, such as the St. James the Great Parish Church and Cape Bolinao Lighthouse, continue to attract visitors. The town’s heritage is preserved through festivals and traditions that highlight the resilience and cultural pride of its people.
