How to learn the rules of chess very quickly!

First create a free lichess.org account (please practice internet safety and privacy when choosing a user name).

This course is fun, and it doesn't rely on watching any videos. I (Coach Jeffrey Ashton) have seen kids as young as 4 years old learn all of the basic movements of pieces in a few minutes using their exercises. The lichess.org course and chessmagnetschool.com course are both free and don't involve chess videos.

I believe that if you wish to teach chess to a 4 or 5 year old, it's best that the parent learn chess first, and patiently teach the rules to their kid. There is an old joke that parents just need to stay one lesson ahead of their kid. It kind of works well for teaching the rules of chess to a very young beginner.

You can always do private lessons to learn the rules of chess, but I don't think it's really cost efficient, and it's kind of awkward both the student and the teacher, to finish the project of learning the rules in as few lessons as possible. It's more natural to learn the rules on your own (or with lichess.org) and then ease into the game, before doing structured lessons, from my experience.

Things like checkmate, stalemate, and En Passant will take longer to learn, but they are also taught on LiChess.org. Finishing this lichess.org course puts a player in a position where they can enjoy group classes.
