A notary public is a public officer appointed by the Secretary of the State, whose function is to administer oaths; to take acknowledgments of deeds & other instruments; to attest to or certify photocopies of certain documents, & to perform other duties specified by law. A notary public serves as an impartial witness to facilitate the workings of commerce to certain sensitive signed documents. When a document is notarized, the public can be sure that signer is not an imposter and by contracting parties can be assured that the document they have signed and no other will have the complete effect.
In accordance with state law, each person having their signature notarized must show a valid
(unexpired) government-issued Photo ID:
Driver's License
US Passport
State Issued I.D. Card
For Financial and Medical Power of Attorney executions, PA law requires you have two adult witnesses who are not named in the documents. Hospitals will rarely provide witness services for liability reasons. These witnesses must also present valid ID.
For wills it is best to also have two adult witnesses present who are not named in the will.
Signer must have read the documents and be competent enough to show that they clearly understand what they are signing. For hospital signings this is very important to know! It is acceptable if the signature is not perfect.
