The Republic of Palansia was founded on the 19th of February, 2023. 19th February is also the nation's national day. After a lot of researching, President Thomas Lu found that no nation was taking this land, even though Egypt and Sudan were right beside Palansia. Formally known as Bir Tawil, or "No Man's Land", the area of Palansia was created because of Britain's presence in Egypt and Sudan.
Britain had become increasingly involved in Egypt, and Sudan was, for the moment, under the control of Egypt and had a “veiled protectorate” in place. The decision to divide the two nations was executed in 1899. The first attempt to redraw Egypt and Sudan's boundaries followed a similar pattern to how other European powers drew up the rest of Africa: with straight lines and with little consideration for geographical, cultural, or any ethnic differences. However, in a rare case of recognizing their own mistake, the British government quickly reversed its position and, in 1902, redrew the map along administrative lines instead. This gave Egypt full control over the Abadba tribe, to which it had closer cultural links. Sudan was given further access to the Red Sea and the Beja tribe, north of the original line.
Because of this, two newly created areas stood out when these two maps were laid over each other. South of the original border was Bir Tawil, now claimed and currently known as Palansia, and to the north was the Hala’ib Triangle. The second border would remain in place for now. Direct British control over Sudan and de facto control in Egypt meant any issues were quickly resolved. It was only when they gained independence that problems would soon arise.
Sudan’s independence in 1956 brought the issue of the border up again. Egypt recognised the 1899 border, whereas the newly formed Sudanese government opted for the redrawn 1902 boundary. This was because the Hala’ib Triangle was very valuable. Valuable resources, access to the Red Sea, and a fixed population all meant the Hala'ib Triangle was a good plot of land to take. In contrast, Bir Tawil was empty, with no access to sea, no population, and with no infrastructure. It became clear that if either party claimed Bir Tawil, they lost their claim on the Triangle. Bir Tawil therefore became unclaimed by any country, until February 19, 2023, when President Thomas Lu founded the Republic of Palansia.
President Thomas Lu created this webpage to claim Bir Tawil, and hopefully without any issues or arguments. Although plans for actually going there in person and build infrastructure is not yet considered, but forming an online webpage about its soon-to-be government, country laws, etc. is already being worked on, and will update every month or less.
