Officials at Pakistan's largest privately-owned television network, Geo, said Friday that cable operators have effectively blocked its broadcast in almost 80 percent of the country.

The channel has been facing arbitrary blockages for the past few years in cantonment areas and surrounding localities across the country, according to Rana Jawad, who directs news at Geo.

"But the crippling shutdowns and disruptions have worsened in recent weeks and the network has been forced off the air in almost 80 percent of the country," he told VOA.

In major cities like Karachi and Lahore, the channel is not accessible in 90 percent of areas, he added. It is up to the government and its media regulator to swiftly investigate and determine who is blocking the broadcast, he asserted.

Debates on social media about the issue strengthen the widespread perception the powerful army has been pressuring cable operators to disrupt Geo's broadcasts. Some postings cited the broadcaster's criticism of both security policies and the military's increased influence over civilian matters as a possible reason for the disruption.

Jawad would not explicitly say who is targeting the network and why it is being done. There also has been no public comment from the military about whether it is orchestrating the shutdowns.

Government officials and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, PEMRA, insist they have nothing to do with the issue.

Instead, PEMRA issued instructions to cable operators earlier this week to restore Geo to normal distribution, or face suspension of their licenses.

New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, or CPJ, has called for full access to Geo to be restored.

"The arbitrary suspension of Geo TV on cable TV is a direct assault on Pakistan's constitutionally guaranteed right to access information," lamented Steven Butler, CPJ's Asia program coordinator.

"It's outrageous that the authorities are either unable to find, or too frightened to name, those powerful enough to orchestrate the blocking of the news distribution," he said.

Geo's 4,000 employees have come under immense "economic and psychological" pressure because they are worried financial losses to their employer could cost them their jobs, Jawad cautioned.

A television studio of a Pakistan news channel descended into chaos when a leader from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and a prominent figure associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) engaged in a physical altercation during a live debate show. A video capturing the brawl has since gone viral on social media.

So it made perfect business sense for Indian broadcasting giant Zee TV to take advantage of such a commercial opportunity and dedicate a channel called Zee Zindagi to their transmission. Regardless, Geo News had already been virtually blacked out across 90 percent of Pakistan, according to Ibrahim Rahman, CEO of Geo TV Network. Cable operators were pressured to bump Geo down their channel listings, and then to remove it altogether, he told CPJ.

"The channel symbolizes the predicaments of our time and our generation. David and I want to show that through friendship, cooperation and unity, you can tackle challenges," Javaid said, speaking by phone from Pakistan, where he has a summer internship.

Zee had been meaning to bring about such a revolution in programming for quite some time now. In an email interview with Dawn, Priyanka Datta, Business Head of Zindagi, shares the idea behind launching this new channel and the response it has received from Indian viewers.

In the first phase, Zindagi is airing handpicked content from Pakistan. In the future, we will showcase content from various countries, which have some degree of cultural affinity with India such as Turkey, Egypt and Latin America among others. The unique selling point of Zindagi versus existing Hindi General Entertainment Channels (GECs) currently in India is that it's the only Hindi channel that has content from overseas and its shows are of finite duration and do not go on for years.

In the first phase, we decided to launch the channel with Pakistani content because Pakistani shows are aired in Urdu, a language that is very close to Hindi. Any Hindi speaking person can identify with the language and relate with it.

Also, all the existing GECs in India are catering to audiences with traditional mindsets. But there is also an audience base with progressive mindsets who are trying to find the perfect balance between their personal and professional lives in contemporary times. They are looking for content which is progressive and real in nature, something they can relate to. Hence, we decided to launch Zindagi, a channel to cater to their needs. We believe that the content on Zindagi lends itself very well to that mindset of audiences. The content is unique because it is fresh and different from the current content that you see on GECs in terms of script, talent; it is shot in real locations and has original soundtracks.

PD: It took us two years to launch this channel. In this time, we did extensive research across cities in India where not only the content purchased but also the original soundtracks were tested to get audience feedback. The team watched nearly 4,000 hours of content to zero down on the right mix of shows that were culturally suitable to Indian sentiments.
