Pain-ting
We cover Still Life, Landscape and Portrait painting in this class. These are three traditional starting points for painting and drawing. You will make 15 or so paintings over the course of several weeks. Most of them will be small painted sketches with several longer larger paintings. We will use Acrylic, Gouache, and/or Oil in this class and cover several styles of painting.
Painting is "learning how to see" and translating that through the medium.

Still Life (learning to see light, color and geometry)
Black and White Value studies. (drawing with paint)
Value or Light is the most important feature of an image. If there is no light there is no image.
Learning to see different values in an image and then match them accurately is a fundamental skill in any representational art.
Introduction to warm and cool (Brown)
We will create warm and cool colors with the addition of brown to your b/w palette.
Quiz
In notability students will choose several images of still lives and deconstruct them as geometric shapes (one class period)
Color
Color is very complex because it has a light and dark values on the gray scale, but also has the additional facet of relational aesthetics.
Your eyes have dedicated parts to sensing color and an entirely separate parts for sensing light levels. Your cones (color) and rods (values) work together to help you decipher the world.
Landscape (a world made out of patterns)
Patterns in Nature
Students will photograph patterns all over campus and for homework
Explore patterns in nature and making patterns with paint.
Putting it all together
After making patterns on several sheets of painting paper you will cut them up to make a landscape collage.
You will make several of these.
Quiz
One class period painting from an image (playing card size)
You will paint from a transferred image using the projector.
This image needs to be one you took of a place you have been
We will focus on color change over distance. (landscapes are really just big still lives with elements that change)
Portraiture (sculpting with paint)
Planes of the head
Breaking down the head will make it far easier to paint.
Well lit faces are easier to paint.
Selfie Portrait
You will use Google Arts and Culture App on your phone to find a famous portrait painting that looks like you.
Provide information and history about the work
Describe how it relates to you.
Portrait of someone you love
This is almost as difficult as representing yourself
Attendance
I take attendance when class starts, if you are not present, I mark you absent. When you arrive with a note please do not interrupt the class. I will either be giving a demo or going over what we will do that day. Once I am finished give me your note or alert me to the email your teacher sent about your tardiness. If you do not have a note, you will receive an MR.
Devices
I do not allow devices in my classroom, unless I specify that you need them. If I see you with a device you will be given an MR. This is your one and only warning.
Grading
Please find the “Rubric” attached on the bulletin board for this class. This is a guide for how each assignment will be graded. We will have group critique as well as formal assessment on each project. Projects/Classwork count for 90% of your overall grade and Homework counts for 10%. This items will be marked as such on the Assignments as they are given. All assignments will be graded through MyBaylor. Late work will be accepted throughout the semester. Each day an assignment is late the maximum points available for that assignment is reduced by 5 pts. The minimum points you can receive on completed late work is 55 pts. (10 class periods late) If assignments are due on a day you are absent, the assignment is due the next class day you are present.
Extra Help & Extra Credit
I am available every morning in Ireland 102 for extra help. I do not give extra credit.
This is where I will post my feedback about your files and such. Please look here for the videos with your class/names on them during the distance learning.
