Hello, this is probably something very simple, but I just can't figure it out!!! I was paiting in a pixel mode using brush tool with an Apple Pencil, I often use a two tap gesture with my hands to scroll, and somewhere during this process my brush tool has stopped working. I have tried creating a new pixel layer, choosing a different brush, different color, checked that my layer and my swatch have a 100% opacity, NOTHING works. I have restarted Affinity Designer and even my Ipad with zero results. I cannot paint with my Apple Pencil, I also cannot paint with my own finger... It just doesn't do anything, although in History I do see using paint brush! I'm going crazy here... Eraser and vector brush tools work as expected, this only affects pixel paint brush tool... Can anybody help me out? Thanks in advance!

Could you please provide a screen recording of you using the brush, showing all layer, brush and colour settings as you do this. If you're unsure of how to record your screen, you can find out more here -

Looking at your layers it appears that you are actually painting on the black and white mask? Maybe that layer was selected (highlighted). If you have a layer selected, the paintbrush will paint on that layer rather than create a new pixel layer.

If all you want to do is remove scratches or blemishes why not use the Inpainting brush or blemish removal tools? They are very effective. Just duplicate the original image and work directly on that or add a pixel layer above the image and set tool to current layer and below. That way the repairs will be drawn on the pixel layer leaving the original layer untouched. You can merge them later if you want.

IYou need to create a pixel layer, fill the layer with 50% using grey scale slider and set the layer blend mode to Overlay. Select a brush and paint over the grey layer with black or white low flow low hardness. Better to use the Dodge and burn brushes on the grey layer as you can pick shadows and highlights.

Create a pixel layer with + symbol in layer studio. Select colour studio and use dropdown menu to switch colour wheel to greyscale slider. Set slider at 50%. Select pixel layer. Select fill tool. Tap screen.

I come from a windows background and am very familiar with the simple 'paint' application; I am searching for an equivalent app for my Mac. I have downloaded [free] 'paintbrush for Mac' from the internet but find that it does not have the tools which MS Paint has, and more importantly, I can work only with 2 colors...white an black. Can anyone point out to me any free download that allows me to work in color too?

Hello Anuj. Dropped by just now to see your post dated 6th of Dec 2016 and I trust that the answer given in the next post has helped you. FYI I too am using this workflow: create my work in Paint, take a screenshot of the work, and do further edits using Preview. This workflow is better than when using Paint alone for adding text and other illustrations.

Am in the process of downloading 'Seashore' which seems to include color, something which Paintbrush does not seem to have. This has layers in them [something which Photoshop also has and I am afraid of!] but they also seem to have given instructions and I hope I will be able to learn and work with this app.

Thanks for your reply. You have given the correct instruction as to how one can add color in paintbrush. However, I feel [I have not experimented fully yet with this] that it does not allow one to draw straight lines [shift>drag]. I have used Microsoft's Paint to draw diagrams to scale. If there are ways to get this feature of drawing straight lines in this app, please let me know.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I looked up the site you had referred. The features are to my need 'high-end'. I need something which allows very basic tools which a low end version of Microsoft's paint offers.

Why are you afraid of applications that use layers? Layers are one of the easier concepts of both drawing and painting apps to understand and use. Think of layers as multiple sheet of clear paper or thin sheets of clear plastic that you can draw or paint on. You can build up a drawing or painting by putting different elements on different layers. If you want to alter elements on a layer only that layer gets affected. If you don't alike what you did on a layer, you can erase an entire layer and start drawing or painting on that layer, again, or delete the layer entirely. You can, also, more easily move elements around on a layer more easily that having all the elements on a drawing or painting on one layer.

There are, also, diagramming programs, that have make drawing simple geometric shapes easier to do and easier to move around and esier to edit and change their appaerance. If there is text within the shapes, both the shape and text moves as one unit, saving you from moving the shapes and text as separate elements.

Further thanks for this additional info. Did get the color working. Shall try out straight lines. Having got used for so many years to MS Paint, I need to get familiar with this or any other similar app on Mac. Right now I have downloaded sketchbookexpress which is a free download from apple store. This seems to be more grand than paintbrush. Let me find out!?

The Procreate iPad drawing app costs $13 to download, but its suite of art tools and creative features make it well worth the money. The digital illustration app is accessible whether you're a design professional, a seasoned digital artist or a beginner to the world of digital illustration. I've been using Procreate for a couple of years and there are still features I'm finding out about that improve my artwork (check out all of the best Procreate tips).

Procreate lets you customize gesture controls so the app is ultimately personalized to you. No matter what level of artist you are, Procreate's features like Quickshape, blend mode, layering, alpha locks and clipping masks can add a new level of professionalism to your art.

The Autodesk Sketchbook app is free but is surprisingly packed with art tools that aren't blocked by paywalls. You can use the free version for seven days and then you'll be asked to make an Autodesk ID, which is also free. It's a little less intimidating than Procreate when you're starting off your digital art journey. When you download the sketch app, it'll give you a quick tutorial of where all the basic tools are.

Autodesk has an extensive, well-organized brush library, and with its customizable brushes, it's easy to adjust settings like brush size, opacity and pressure. Even with a typical learning curve of a new drawing app, the toolbar is pretty easy to figure out. I also liked that, even when extensively zoomed in, the app didn't lose its "drawing" feel by letting you see the pixels in your stroke.

One of my favorite parts of Sketchbook is the focus on making the transition from paper to screen easy. You might've done cool sketching in a notebook, and with Autodesk, you don't have to redraw the sketch in the app. Your camera doubles as a scanner so you can import your art. Images import with a transparent background so you can immediately get to work in the app.

Art Set 4 is one of the more basic, realistic drawing apps. It's free to download, but most of its tools are unlocked through the Premium Pro features, which cost $13. This app would be best if you're brand-new to digital illustration; it feels similar to having physical tools and paper in front of you. I love its user interface. If you're overwhelmed by the idea of going into a more complex app like Procreate or Autodesk, the Art Set 4 drawing tool is a good one to get started with. It's also fun if you just want to doodle.

Something I really like about Art Set 4 is the ease with which even the free tools work together in a piece. It's also nice that you can swap between multicolored paper styles like canvas and the rough surface of heavyweight, cold press sheets for watercolor. You can choose burlap styles, cardboard and grids without messing up a drawing you've already done.

When you explore the app, items that require Premium Pro will be locked. If you tap on a locked item, Art Set will ask if you want to upgrade and unlock everything. Premium gives you full access to over 200 brushes, 3D paint, fluid watercolor, the ability to layer and use masks, enable a "wet canvas," drawing guides like symmetry, shapes, filling and dozens of other ways to customize your workspace.

Not everything you create in an art app has to be a massive endeavor that ends with a masterpiece. Having fun is the most important part. Simply coloring can make for a creative and relaxing afternoon. Lake is a free ASMR art app packed with coloring book sheets -- in all different styles -- from artists all over the world.

The app's audio element is particularly cool. For example, if you do digital painting with the paintbrush, you'll hear quiet brush sounds. If you choose the spray paint tool, you'll hear a ball bearing rattling like it would if you shook a paint can. You can turn the ASMR off in settings. 152ee80cbc
