Nia grew up in a loving family, two parents, a younger brother and younger sister, and a whole extended family she was always close to. Despite all that, she always knew she could never be honest about what she really wanted in life. She knew from a young age that she liked girls, and also knew from a young age that her family would kick her out or try to "fix" her if they knew. So Nia never told them. 

She was in the closet up until her second year of college, when she finally came out as a lesbian, and sure enough, her entire family had blocked her within the week. She was all alone, except for her best friend from high school and his dad. Her best friend, Zephyr, helped her open up a nightclub: Alphabet Soup. It wasn't officially a gay bar, but it became well-known for being a safe place for LGBT+ people to spend time without fear of being harrassed. 

Slowly, but surely, Nia created her own family within her community. She did everything she could to make sure no one felt alone.
