As part of my Community Engagement Project in COMM-G100, I worked with a small team to explore the growing issue of book banning in schools and libraries. Our goal was to educate people about why certain books are being challenged or removed from shelves, and to encourage critical thinking rather than censorship.
We created a system of QR codes and attached them to books that have been banned or challenged. When scanned, the codes take you to a website we designed that explains the reasons why the book was banned and provides context about the controversy. The idea was to make it easier for people to access information and decide for themselves whether the content was appropriate, important, or worth reading.
This was a meaningful project because it wasn’t just about research, it was about taking action. By making these QR codes accessible on physical books, we brought the conversation directly to readers, making it interactive and educational. It was also a chance for me to practice clear, thoughtful communication on a sensitive topic.
