Standard 1 - Teaching Diverse Students – The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
Rationale
The artifact is the Strategies Paper, the Characteristics and Causes Paper and the Power Point Presentation.
The Strategies Paper was chosen because it gave me the ability to learn about Accommodations and Modifications for a student with a Hearing Impairment. It also gave me the ability to see the potential for what each student can do, when they have an ideal learning environment.
The Characteristics and Causes Paper was chosen so that I could find out about Hearing Impairment, what causes one, the severity and how it can be helped.
The Power Point Presentation was created to bring the strategies and characteristics together, to better explain Hearing Impairment. The video, activity and handout within the power point presentation were chose to help the audience understand Hearing Impairment and how they can help their students.
Standard Connection
My artifact shows that I am becoming a competent teacher who understands the "diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences." ( Illinois Learning Standard I) The artifact also shows that I am beginning to "use instructional activities to maximize student learning." (ILS I)
Self-Evaluation
By creating these artifacts, I am becoming more proficient in Illinois Learning Standard I. Through research and investigation, I have learned a lot about hearing impairments, and how I can help a student who has one. My strength is that I fully understand the diverse characteristics and abilities of students. My weakness is that I still need to work on creating more activities to maximize student learning.
