Thosereaders who rise from the last pages of a long historical work,covering several volumes and hundreds or thousands ofpages, with a clear central conception of the whole work areprofoundly grateful to the author. But if your subject isdifficult, and if the effect is of great importance, by no meansallow yourself to be swerved from determination to find thereal object which you are seeking, but even at the expenseof time and trouble state the center of your intentions asrelated to the subject, yourself, and your reader.
