Cub Scouts work to build confidence – and their own custom race cars! They begin with an official Pinewood Derby Race Car kit provided by our Pack, then create a design, carve it from the wood block provided in the kit, and detail it. It’s a wonderful learning experience centered on teamwork, ingenuity and sportsmanship.
Pack Power Tool Prep Day TBC
The Pack will have power tools available during the scheduled Pack meeting. Pack adults with wood cutting tools will be available to help cut the Scout's Pinewood block to the general shape the Scout desires.
We will also have stations to make a pinewood themed neckerchief slide, get Pinewood license photos taken, select paint to bring home and paint cars, weigh and balance cars that are cut, and get help with wheel alignment.
What does the Scout need to do?
Please come with the idea and shape roughly drawn on the wooden block. We will not be making the Scout's car for them, rather we will be helping rough cut the shape to ensure all Scouts are able to make the car design they'd like with their parent's help.
Test Track Day - Thursday, March 5, 2026 TBC
The Pack will have our Pinewood Track set up at AMR Chapel and Scouts are able to test their Pinewood Derby race cars during the committee meeting (6-7pm) on March 5. Please stop in any time during this time period if available. Most Scouts take about 10 minutes to check in and test their car.
We will have our Pinewood Scale, intake forms, and some small tools to help Scouts fine-tune their cars. If desired, Scouts can check their cars into the "Impound Lot" where the Pack will keep them safe until Race Day. Checking in cars early will reduce the time a family needs to plan to arrive early on Race Day to check in.
What does the Scout need to do? Please come with your prepared Pinewood Derby car ready to run it on the track. We will have minor tools such as some graphite powder, glue, hammers, etc. available for Scouts and their parents to use to fine-tune their cars. Parents will need to help their Scouts with this part. If desired, please plan to bring your own weights to adjust the car weight or any other tools. If you have questions leading up to this, please reach out to Wolf Den Assistant Den Leader - Josh on 808-450-9685.
Race Day - Saturday, March 7, 2026
Check-in begins at 2:30pm; Races start at 3:00pm
Time to RACE! Scouts and their families will check in at 2:30pm if they did not do so previously and we will commence the races at 3pm. Each Scout's car will get multiple runs down the track and winners will be determined by fastest time.
What does the Scout need to do? Please arrive early in Class A uniform if you did not previously check in your car and get it weighed. Then it's time to HAVE FUN!
AMR Chapel
Any car design is welcome at our Derby as long as the Scout had the idea and is an active participant in building their car. If your Scout wants to make a monster truck or a princess car, no Problem! We want your Scout to have the car of their dreams.
The Pack will provide one Pinewood Derby Car kit for each registered Scout.
Siblings, parents and friends of Scouts are welcome to participate in our Pinewood Derby as long as they purchase an official BSA Pinewood car kit and abide by our Pinewood Derby rules as below. If the Pack has kits remaining, anyone is welcome to purchase them from us for $7 a kit. If we are out of kits, the Scout Shop usually has them in stock or they are available for purchase online.
Our Pack follows the Aloha Council Derby guidelines so that our top racers are able to continue on to the District level with no modifications or alterations needed for their car. For full Derby guidelines please see the information below.
