We will be holding a Pack Hike on Saturday, June 6 and plan to hike the Kamananui Valley Trail with a plan to step off at 9 am.
The Kamananui Trail (also known as Kamananui Valley Road) is a peaceful, mostly flat, 8-mile round-trip hike. Located in the lush Moanalua Valley, it features historical ruins, petroglyphs, and 7 scenic stream crossings over historic cobblestone bridges before branching into more challenging ridge routes.
Trail Overview
Distance: 8 miles (12.9 km) out and back
Time Required: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate (Good for families and dogs)
Elevation Gain: ~600 feet (183 meters)
Location: Trailhead at the back of Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park (1849 Ala Aolani St, Honolulu)
Key Highlights
Damon House Ruins: Informational markers about 1.5 miles in point to the historic ruins and grand staircase of the Douglas Damon estate.
Pohakukaluahine: Just before the seventh stream crossing, you will find a large boulder featuring ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs.
Access to Advanced Trails: The path serves as the main access route for the rugged Kulanaʻahane Trail and the back way to the Moanalua Saddle/Stairway to Heaven.
Essential Tips
Flash Flood Warning: Do not hike during heavy rains, as stream crossings can become extremely dangerous.
Facilities: Moanalua Valley Park has restrooms and potable water, but there are no facilities on the trail itself.
Permits/Fees: No fees or permits are required to hike the valley road.
Preparation: Bring plenty of water, bug spray, and wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy.
This will be a chance for the Pack to get together over the summer break and enjoy being outdoors. This is NOT compulsory for Scouts to attend, just for those that would like to particpate.
Please let the Outdoor Chair, Mr. Canaan, or the Cubmaster, Mr. Josh, know if you will be attending so the medical forms will be able to be brought on the hike. This is a BSA requirement for all Scout activities.
Alternate option
As an alternate option to the pack hike if you are unable to make it, please feel free to go on a walk or hike of your choosing as a family. If you choose the alternate option, please let your den leader know so they will be able to update Scoutbook for the Summertime Fun adventure and the respective outdoor adventure depending on the scout's rank.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mr Canaan on 919 279 3365 or Mr Josh on 808 450 9685.
