The Mission.
Since its beginning, the Cub Scout program has been a fun and educational experience concerned with values. Besides providing a positive place where cubs can enjoy safe, wholesome activities, Cub Scouting focuses on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service.
The Pack:
A Cub Scout Pack is made up of Dens, or smaller groups of boys/girls all of the same age and/or grade level. The Dens are identified by rank:
Although many cubs start as Lions, they can join at any time. Dens meet 3-4 times per month as a group, to work on projects toward their rank, to prepare something for the Pack meeting, to work toward earning elective awards, or any other activity they like. They meet in St. Mary's meeting rooms run by the Den Leader, the adult volunteer who organizes and runs the den meetings. They may go on field trips.
One Friday night per month during the school year (September to May), all the Dens meet together as a Pack. The Cubmaster leads the Pack Meeting, which has been planned and organized with the help of the Pack Committee. The Pack Committee consists of all the Den Leaders, plus other adults who help run things "behind the scenes" for the Pack. Pack meetings often follow a theme, and are held at St. Mary's in Haney Hall.
The Pack also organizes monthly activities outside of den and pack meetings. Past activities have included Voyageur Canoe, Tolelo Zoo overnight, D-A weekend campout, , Rouge River Cleanup, Scouting for Food, and many others. The pack also participates in Scout Sunday at St. Mary's or other church of their choosing.
Cubs "graduate" to the next rank level in June. They have a rank badge that they work to achieve that is specific to each rank. We generally try to help them to finish all the requirements for their rank badge by February-April, when we hold our Blue and Gold Banquet. However, they have until June to finish any awards for their rank. Although each cub only works on the rank for their age group in a given year, any boy who has just joined Cub Scouting must first earn a Bobcat award before he can be awarded his rank for that year.
During the summer months, we have at least one Pack activity each month, although Den and Pack meetings are suspended for the summer. These summer Pack activities allows for kids to earn their Summertime pins or Outdoor Activity Award Patch.
Details and current positions are in our Pack Leadership Chart.
