Anybody who makes electronic music must think this is a joke, but I have heard this sentiment before from multiple sources, most recently in that thread about clipping. People state the information so confidently that the first time I heard it, I believed it at first. When I started to learn more about synths, though, I remembered what I had heard and looked it up again, more carefully.

The (false) idea is that a clipping amp will damage speakers because it chops off the top of waveforms, turning it more and more into a square wave. Square waves are dangerous and unnatural and the sharp edges make the speaker try and move too fast, which breaks speakers.

While a clipping power amp might damage speakers, it's not because of the square wave. It would be because there is too much power being sent to the speaker. This pushes the magnet/cone too far, which tears the cone. If you sent a square wave to the same speaker at a more reasonable volume, the speaker would do what it always does: react to the changing current and closely approximate the waveform.

Edit2: Ok, so everybody is quoting that Electrovoice PA Bible. Never do they say "square waves have DC which blows up speakers." What they are saying is "The harsh, irritating distortion products generated are in high frequency and are thus fed to the high-frequency components of the system. This output is not present in normal program material and can overload tweeters and midranges - creating a one way system without a tweeter."
