In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries launched a new digital global languages program, with a mission to extend learning and education worldwide. The company launched its first online Swahili dictionary by the Oxford University Press.

In a video message delivered Wednesday at the launch of its online Swahili dictionary, Oxford Dictionaries director Judy Pearsall said one reason for putting together the Swahili versions is to help connect cultures across Africa.

"One of the things we grapple with, with printed books and the printed version of the dictionary, is that you need a few years to get a new edition, but an online dictionary gives us a unique opportunity of updating new words that come after they have been vetted," he said.

Madan was considered the mission's chief linguist in East Africa.[2] He continued to work on Swahili dictionaries. Initially this was a pioneer's work, as Ludwig Krapf's dictionary of Swahili, the first for this language, had not yet been published.[3] In 1894 Madan's English-Swahili dictionary was published, followed by a Swahili-English dictionary in 1903.

In both sections, entries are presented in clusters, based on the connections between the words of the target language (Swahili) in terms of meaning or origin. This meaning-driven presentation allows target language terms that are relatively similar in meaning, and therefore easily confused, as well as terms derived from the same base, to appear together in parallel contrastive lines. This creates an immersion effect that is particularly stimulating for language learning, since the user gets the opportunity to discover the words of the learned language group-by-group, rather than one-by-one, and is constantly reminded of subtle differences between different terms. It will help the learner master the vocabulary at a faster pace and with a better understanding of the rules that shape the lexicon of the target language. In addition, the introduction to the dictionary presents key grammatical points of Swahili that will help the reader make a productive use of information provided in the body of the dictionary. Additional grammatical information about the target language words such as the agreement pattern, the register of speech, or the level of use, is also provided in both sections to make it immediately accessible to the non-native user.

The early history of nautical technology in the western Indian Ocean and adjoining parts of the eastern Africa coast is poorly understood. In the absence of evidence from shipwrecks, it has hitherto been based largely on the uncertain interpretation of a few documentary references and speculation surrounding technological parallels and assumed lexical resemblances. This paper examines some of the linguistic evidence in a more rigorous way, by undertaking a cross-dialectal comparison of names for watercraft and terms for outriggers in Swahili (Kiswahili), a Bantu language spoken on the islands and in scattered communities along the western seaboard of the Indian Ocean. The resulting analysis provides a new outline of the development of Swahili nautical technology and maritime culture, highlighting the key role played by particular boat forms, and the relative importance of indigenous innovation and different external influences, including the elusive impacts of Austronesian seafaring.

Research on dictionary use, which has grown in importance since the 1990s, is a type of dictionary research which aims to provide the foundation for the refinement of completed and ongoing lexicographic projects (Tpel 2014). Research conducted in this area aims to obtain answers that justify a particular structure or methodology or indicates the need to re-evaluate decisions made during the development process of a dictionary.

The quality of a dictionary is determined by the extent that the features it offers and the information it provides prove useful and appropriate to the intended audience. The function of dictionary-use research is to check these aspects. Empirical studies on the use of online dictionaries, for instance, allow identifying a number of user-related issues and thus contribute to the development of more effective lexicographic tools (Mller-Spitzer 2014).

The main purpose of this proposal is to contribute a theoretical framework to improving the user experience of the Olympic Dictionary and the dictionary itself as well as to provide input for future research on this topic. The following goals emerge as an offshoot of the main goal: (i) to characterise the online Olympic Dictionary within a digital metalexicographic framework; (ii) to draw up proposals to study the current user behaviour of this dictionary with an aim to further improve its efficacy, and (iii) to build the necessary comparable language corpora (in Brazilian Portuguese and English) to underpin further work on this online dictionary.
