Service, Engagement, and Leadership
“To equip and encourage those passionate about service to mobilize and lead the OWU and surrounding communities to service that inspires compassion, knowledge, and transformation in both the self and others.”
The mission of Service, Engagement, and Leadership (SEAL) is to equip and encourage those passionate about service to mobilize and lead the OWU community to service for the transformation of both self and community. As a community involvement SLU that has been described as, "the student arm of the service-learning office," our efforts are geared toward serving our school and surrounding communities. House members engage in regular service and explore passions to strengthen Delaware and OWU, while also promoting service to all OWU students. We do this by spreading awareness of community issues and promoting service opportunities, as well as providing service opportunities to those who need help finding them. This is not just an organization internally focused, we want to make an impact across the campus community.
Each member completes one house project every year. These have ranged from clothing drives to voter registration drives to informational presentations; as long as it serves the community, it can be a house project.
Each month, we complete at least one service project as a group. We have done community cleanups, worked with local organizations including, but not limited to, the Delaware Humane Society and Stratford Ecological Center, and we have participated in local fundraisers and awareness events. We also keep a constantly updating list of service opportunities for our members and others to participate in.
We love to include as many people as possible in our work. If you would like to join in our service projects and attend our house projects and other events, please join the Friends of SEAL GroupMe on the OWU GroupMe page! We'd love to have you!
Our house was established in 2020 by, then moderator, Grace Ison (Class of 2023). Service and service-learning has been weaved into the identity of Ohio Wesleyan throughout the entire history of the university. It has changed and grown over time, but service has always been a huge component of an OWU education. The founding members had a vision of getting a group of students together that could be stewards of the legacy of service at OWU - they wanted to get the OWU community more integrated into the greater Delaware community so that they could help others to do service in way that is more impactful and effective.
