Welcome Address by Coordinator
Aina o. Adeogun
Professor of Toxicology
University of Ibadan
Dear esteemed OWSD Ibadan colleagues,
It is indeed a great honor to be the face of Organization for Women in Science in Developing Countries (OWSD) Ibadan branch as Coordinator for the 2022-2024 year. Our membership has increased from 48 in 2014 to over 200 in 2022 due to the commendable efforts of Past Coordinators – Professors Stella Odebode and Funmi Ajani that has kept OWSD Ibadan on the move! Together with the efforts of our executive members and various committees, we continue to record an encouraging increase in membership with over 50 members in the last month alone.
We want to acknowledge the support of members as we navigate through the coming years and it is my fervent hope that you and your families will keep being safe and well. The days ahead can only get better as we continue to forge new paths to make our organization better and by reaching out to members individually and collectively in the pursuit of developing our research sustainability society and help lift one another up through collaboration and fusion of research concepts and ideas that are geared towards societal improvements on the national and global platform to ensure better research funding and output. Our resilience in the face of dwindling resources and current happenings is commendable and OWSD Ibadan is with you all through this. We look forward to an exciting time in OWSD Ibadan and hope to continue the impressive legacies of preceding councils.
The operational foundation for my administration is “Promoting Collaborative Research, Fostering Unity, Making Research Attractive and Building Societal Gains”. This aspiration is borne out of the mandate of OWSD International in providing a global template for the development of women in STEM. We will continue to strengthen and enrich the legacies of previous councils to further increase the global reach and visibility of OWSD Ibadan. We intend to promote the parent OWSD initiatives at bringing our young and vibrant graduate and postdoctoral scholars into the OWSD fold and we hope to strengthen this initiative further by connecting this exciting group of young academics with more senior colleagues in the academia, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and industry to enhance their research training and outputs. We therefore intend to harness the enormous talents of our early career and graduate candidates to grow our unique organization.
Our past coordinators have volunteered their time and resources to help grow our organization and are passionate about building capacity in the Science and Allied Research in Nigeria as we continue to build on the foundational aspirations of OWSD International as a global organization.
On behalf of OWSD Ibadan Branch, I wish you all a safe and pleasant rest of the year with good health wherever you may be. We remain confident that our organization will continue to grow in leaps and bounds with brighter days ahead and I look forward to interacting with you all individually and collectively as we navigate the terrain of another year and beyond. Together we can!
