Taiwan is a very safe country. Crime rates are low and public transportation is safe and convenient. It is very easy to get around as a solo traveler. Locals are kind and are always willing to help out. Previous teachers have always felt safe getting around and had plenty of opportunities to explore the country.
When teachers are not teaching, their time is their own. After school, interns have an opportunity to privately tutor students to earn additional spending money. On the weekend and holidays, they have are free to explore Hualien or take a train to another city. Previous teachers have enjoyed visiting the beach, going to the night market, trying the local cuisine (you can find it on nearly every street corner!), or taking the train to Taipei on the weekends.
The intern teachers are provided with free housing right above the preschool. Teachers wake up to sounds of sweet young students playing on the playground, and are within biking distance of markets, the beach, and the train station.
Hualien is described as the Hawaii of Taiwan. It is nestled between beautiful beaches, rich farmland and green mountains. From night markets to cultural temples the whole city is full of things to explore.
Teachers who sign a 6-month teaching contract will receive US $500 reimbursement for their plane ticket, and after a 90-day stay, they will receive US $150 to help them travel to another Asian country for a 10-day vacation. If teachers can only sign a 3-month contract, then the only thing they need to pay for is their plane ticket to get here. They will get paid once they start teaching.
