We have strived to create a set or armor out of corrugated (card) board. This armor came to fruition through the use of laser cutting and many, and I mean many prototypes. (School Project)
Many different prototypes went into the creation of the armor. The most notable changes were found in the the main body piece. This is also the only one that we did not scrap each time and start from the beginning.
This is the first model for the main body.
It was easy to see that this was not going to work. The dimensions just were not even close to what was needed in order to fit a human body.
The design was then modified in order to fit a person. Top shoulder straps and side panels were also added in order to make it fit with a back piece.
After many more trials and failures this is the design that we ended up with. It does not have any sharp edges and fits well with the anatomy of the intended wearer.
Other models include but are not limited to...
After all that modeling it was time to make the pieces at 1/10 scale to see if we need to make any huge adjustments to our designs.
First paper was printed out with the flat patterns of the auto desk mock ups. Then they were tediously cut out using an x-acto knife. This was done to confirm dimensions and not waste any materials before cutting.
Once confident in the design the laser cut process was initiated. After the parts were cut out we put our armor onto a wood human model to see, again, if we needed to make any adjustments to our design.
We then took the measurements of our final design and put it onto a sheet or corrugated board. After measuring out everything it was time to cut. I preferred to use the jigsaw, bandsaw combo to accomplish this.
Here are some images of what they looked like after they were cut out and folded.
