Owen Falzon

Brief Bio

Owen Falzon is an Associate Professor with the Centre for Biomedical Cybernetics at the University of Malta. He obtained his first degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta in 2006. In 2012, he completed his PhD studies on "EEG Signal Phase Analysis for Brain-Computer Interfacing". His research interests include signal processing, image processing, machine learning, computer vision, biomedical engineering, brain-computer interfacing and medical thermography.

He is involved in the coordination of various research projects, undergraduate and postgraduate project supervision, primarily focusing on the development of signal and image processing algorithms, mainly in the context of medical thermography, EEG signal processing and brain-computer interfacing.

He has been involved in the coordination and technical supervision of a number of funded R&I projects including:

Advanced Computational Techniques for Dynamic Medical Thermography (ACOTHERM)

Funded through MCST R&I-2019-012V. Role: Project coordinator.

Non-Contact Imaging for Vital Sign Monitoring (NIVS)

Funded through MCST R&I-2018-004V. Role: Project coordinator.

Dense Recordings of In-Shoe Foot Temperature (DRIFT)

Funded through MCST R&I-2018-016T.  Role: Project co-applicant.

Food Inspection using Hyperspectral Imaging (FIHI)

Funded through MCST R&I-2015-048-T. Role: Project coordinator.

Brain Controlled Applications (BrainApp)

Funded through MCST R&I-2015-132-T. Role: Project partner.

Thermal Imaging for Peripheral Vascular Disease Monitoring in Diabetics (TIPMID)

Funded through MCST R&I-2013-028. Role: Project coordinator.

He has also been involved in the coordination and successful completion of the MCST commercialisation voucher programmes in relation to the projects above.

He has published his work in various scientific journals and conferences (refer to scholar.google.com/citations?user=BgnnWgcAAAAJ&hl).

He is also a reviewer on a number of journals which include amongst others the:

- IEEE Transactions in Biomedical Engineering;

- IEEE Transactions in Neural Systems and Rehabiliation Engineering;

- IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics;

- IOP Journal of Neural Engineering; and

- Elsevier Journal of Neuroscience Method.

He is also a member of the management committee of the EU Cost Action CA15118, Mathematical and Computer Science Methods for Food Science and Industry (FoodMC).
