Why Train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
In addition to all of the benefits inherent in improving one’s physical fitness, participation in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also teaches...
#1 Coordination and Body Awareness
Learning Jiu Jitsu requires a child to execute techniques that contain many small details. Learning to perform these techniques develops the child’s fine motor skills and teaches them a good understanding of base and balance. This assists the child in developing neuromuscular connections, and increases coordination and balance.
Furthermore, these skills will translate to other sports and activities in the child’s life. This could aid in making the child a well-rounded athlete. And, surely promote overall success in their everyday life.
#2 Discipline and Focus
Look around, we live in a world full of stimulation. In order to separate the good from the bad, children need to learn the difference. It has been said that discipline and focus are like muscles that need to be trained. Learning Jiu Jitsu is fun and highly stimulating. But, the techniques can be very detailed, and require discipline to learn and properly execute. Children enjoy participating in Jiu Jitsu, and success is attained as they focus on instruction and proper practice. As a result of doing Jiu Jitsu, a child will strengthen physically and mentally. Surely, developing these skills will foster improved school work, stronger relationships, and an overall higher quality of life.
#3 Confidence
You always hear that martial arts will give a child more confidence, and it is true. For example, in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) students use what they learn on the mat in every lesson. While engaged in learning, students constantly learn how to adapt and when to use specific techniques. In addition, students learn how to execute the techniques they have learned against an opponent that is resisting. More importantly, this is all done in a safe and controlled environment to ensure each participant is relaxed and maintains confidence. There is no screaming or breaking boards in BJJ, instead the students engage in real time situations of attempting to physically assert dominance or escaping uncomfortable and compromising positions. Having to be decisive and plan ahead in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives the practitioner real confidence, and a real way to defend themself without having to strike another person.
#4 Socialization
In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, children will interact with many diverse people and share common experiences like drilling techniques, playing games, and live grappling. Many friendships are built as the children learn to communicate with their peers and provide motivational support to one another. In addition children learn to respect to the requests of authority figures (like the instructors and assistant instructors) and accept constructive criticism. As well as, verbalize strengths, frustrations, and needs. This environment enables your child grow and learn with new friends that could last a lifetime.
#5 Fitness and the “Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle”
BJJ provides a fun and demanding cardiovascular workout for your child, and they will LOVE doing it! Some benefits of participating in BJJ are that it may assist in weight loss, gaining core strength, and enabling kids to have increased energy and stamina for other demanding activities. The term “Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle” has been coined in BJJ to describe the way many practitioners learn to live. Due to the demanding nature of Jiu Jitsu maintaining one’s body, living a healthy life becomes a necessity. Eating healthy foods, sleeping correctly, and stretching daily are vital to maintaining one’s body. Developing a healthier lifestyle will help one get more out of their training and themself. Feeling well leads to a happier, healthier individual.
#6 Goal Setting and Completion
There are many opportunities in Jiu Jitsu the student to test themself and measure improvement. There are competitions, belt promotions, or more simply, executing a new technique while grappling. Realistic, attainable goals are regularly established to enforce a high work ethic. Benchmarks, or incremental steps, enable students to monitor their progress. Participation in Jiu Jitsu encourages students to reach a little further and work a little harder each day. The goal is to always try to improve.
#7 Self-Defense
As mentioned earlier, BJJ will give your child a REAL means of self-defense. Bullying exists and is a real concern in all schools. Jiu Jitsu will give your child more confidence which is the number one bully deterrent. Bullies typically prey on those who provide the least resistance. From learning respect of others and various problem solving methods, participants will develop strategies to manage conflicts. In the unfortunate event that a physical conflict cannot be avoided, the student will possess tools to efficiently defend themself, while providing minimal harm to the assailant. Our goal for this is to establish in children the ability to mentally, and if need be, physically manage all conflicts.
We are teammates.
We are family. We will be safe,
have fun and stay fit, while training.
