9/28/25 - 6 weeks in! Booster meeting tomorrow!
Happy Sunday everyone! We have officially spent 6 weeks together and in that time, all 100 students have either started or are continuing their musical literacy journey by learning how to identify symbols in their read sheet music. Instruction is split between students sight reading practice excerpts and rehearsing repertoire that will be featured on our upcoming concerts. Speaking of which, our first performance of the year, our "Informance", an informal performance showcasing the work the students have been preparing so far this semester, is coming up on Wednesday, October 8th, at 6:00pm in Overhills Auditorium! THIS IS REQUIRED!
Our next booster meeting is tomorrow, September 29th @ 6:00pm in the Chorus room E132! All parents/guardians are encouraged to attend. If you are interested in helping with the Overhills Choral Booster or just staying informed along your child's time in chorus, you are welcome!
7/23/25 - 3 Weeks Until We Return!!
Happy Wednesday everyone! We officially have only 3 weeks left until FDOC! I know you may be soaking up the last few weeks of your break BUT there are things that I would like to inform you on before we meet on FDOC.
NC Honors Chorus Auditions
The North Carolina Music Educator's Association hosts the NC Honors Chorus each year in Winston-Salem, NC. The NC Honors Chorus is an auditioned choral ensemble thats purpose is to honor outstanding singers from high school choral music programs in the state of NC by giving them the opportunity to perform at the highest level of achievement. This opportunity provides students with an outstanding opportunity to learn from students and teachers of choral programs from across the state.
Auditions will take place on September 25, 2025, at Highland Presbyterian Church, in Fayetteville, NC. Each program is allowed to send 20% of their choral program to the in-person audition, therefore we will send a maximum of 20 students to audition.
If you are interested in auditioning, you MUST begin preparation as you will audition for Mr. Ream before going to audition for the adjudicators.
STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY FOR INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING PREPARATION
When selecting your voice part, ensure that you are choosing the voice part that is best fit for you and your voice. For example, if Mr. Ream were auditioning, he would audition as a Bass 1. If you have questions about which part you should audition as, please reach out to Mr. Ream!
The audition procedure will work as follows:
Vocalizations; The judge will use whatever personal means they prefer to determine the student's vocal range/tessitura.
Audition Piece; the judge starts audition recording. Student will sing their audition of "Leap Free of the Cage" by Connor Koppin. There will be a brief silence in the recording. Be ready for the sight-reading script to begin.
Sight-Reading; turn over sight-singing exercise on music stand as soon as piece is finished. Students are not allowed to write on the sight-singing. Recording will give instructions and play tonic, scale, arpeggio, and tonic four times in tempo. Singers may sing or hum while the scale and arpeggio are being played. You will then have 60 seconds to rehearse. Singers may sing, hum, or clap aloud as they rehearse. The exercise may be sung with solfege, numbers, or a neutral syllable.
This procedure is designed to help students prepare for sight-reading in the audition. It will also give the judges a brief time to write additional comments while the singers rehearse the exercise. Singers should not feel that their judge is ignoring them and may expect some interaction during or after the process.
