Ouyoshi Akeyama’s career cannot be fully described simply by the fact that he has continued to work for many years while remaining based outside the major metropolitan centers. Childhood memory, time with family, journeys to distant places, aging, and encounters with landscape did not merely pass by at the moment they were lived; over long years, they gradually took form within human figures and recurring motifs. Subjects such as mother and child, the sleeping body, newspapers, Siberia, and wildfire did not emerge as separate interests, but seem instead to be loosely connected within a single question: what it means for a person to carry things within, and to go on living while looking steadily at the world. The events listed here are the moments in which that long flow of work became visible at particular points.
