Before beginning the project we utilized hands-on research and background information building through an ethnography review, SWOT analysis, and stakeholder analysis.
Ethnography Review
Through the ethnography review we conducted, we collected data on the art and community present in the El Cajon area.
Beginning at the trolley station, we walked through El Cajon towards the city center. We passed residential and industrial roads before downtown and saw a complete shift in culture.
Although downtown El Cajon was rife with art and third spaces, the rest of the areas were polluted, industrial, or empty.
SWOT Analysis and Stakeholder Presentation:
There is a strong presence of art and culture in El Cajon's downtown as previously established, making it a strength when looking at connecting communities, schools, and art.
Threats to stronger communities and arts are a lack of funding for the schools in the area as well as economic downfall holding back local businesses.
Despite this, El Cajon is one of the most diverse cities in San Diego with organizations and businesses like Sophie's Gallery and Flying Hills School of the Arts that benefit from or can participate in our project.
Stakeholder Analysis Chart
Our most valuable stakeholder is by far the elementary schools we worked with, from the children to the administration, who would be the ones most directly responsible for the education of children. El Cajon is also home to local art non-profits that could be involved, as well being close in proximity to San Diego State University.
