EDUCATION
For young people, education is a legal requirement as well as the promise of a better future. And for many young people, education is the site of a normativity that excludes them.
The bottom of this chair is composed of theory and description of education, but only on paper. It does not yet have a seat where you can authentically sit.
Desegregation of Schools
On May 17th, 1954 the Supreme Court ruled the segregation of schools was unconstitutional with the landmark Brown v. Board ruling. The desegregation movement started with 9 individuals nicknamed, “The Little Rock 9”
Knowledge is Power!
Teaching slaves to read and write was against the law during slavery. The punishment slaves suffered was brutal beatings and aputation of toes/fingers. This speaks to the awareness that education could empower slaves to try to gain their freedom.
