Program Components
Program Components
KnLC attempts to address some of the problems in key areas of education for young people which consists of 5 main activities that intrinsically support each other, as follows:
2-years- Formal Education,
Symposium and Training Series,
Work Internship and Career Development,
Leadership Camp, and
Social Involvement through Community Service Outreach.
2-years-Formal Education
KnLC is 2 years of learning through a formal education covering 10 months of studies to prepare for academic learning and discipline of the students. This component of the school will be coordinated and supervised by the school Principal and will be assisted by 7 full-time teachers who will cover topics ranging from Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, Leadership, Thai, and Computer.
2. Symposium and Training Series
The Symposium and Training Series includes expert guests to speak on various topics that are relevant to the field of studies of the students, including (host) development issues that create an impact on the present situation. It is expected that this component of the project will assist further in expanding the students' vantage point on various social, political, and economic issues and how they can contribute to addressing some of the problems their community is facing.
3. Work Internship and Career Development
The Work Internship and Career Development will allow the students to gain real-life work experience where they apprenticed with existing experienced community workers within an organization. It is also expected that this component of the program will be able to empower female students to be involved in community-based work.
This program component will also include opportunities for students to gain mentors and to take part in an internship program. The internship periods will cover at least 2 months each year and the students have the option to work with an agreed community-based organization (CBO), independently or as a group. Mentor/s (from community-based organizations) and students will meet regularly for special activities to establish a successful one-to-one relationship. The student/s will also visit the mentor’s workplace to learn about various career options.
4. Leadership Camp
The Leadership Camp will be an annual event where various youth groups (in and out of the school) will be convened to take part in a series of activities that promote solidarity and unity among Karenni young people. The program would like to encourage active participation of young people especially in the social and political arena. The leadership camp will also allow young leaders to assume community leadership roles within a few days. The leadership camp will be held especially at the end of February. This work will be done in partnership with the other CBOs, alumni, NGOs, and Youth organizations. Ideally, the project will also aim at working with other youth groups from other Burmese ethnic nationalities, as possible.
5. Social Involvement through Community Service Outreach
This Social Involvement through Community Service Outreach will instill a sense of service and a leadership potential that has not been easy in the past for the young adults living in Camp 2. Young people from Camp 2 were limited to a tenth grade because their families did not have the funds to send them to Camp 1 to study (Before school was established). This project will encourage and motivate the students through the focus on leadership and management. The program component will further strengthen the skills and attitude of the students for community service. Moreover, this component is very important considering that many skilled workers have already left for third-country resettlement. The future graduates of KnLC are expected to fill in the gap and will provide continuity in the delivery of quality services for the refugee community.
