Our Lady of the Cross Library - Policies and Procedures

The guidelines and expectations that help our library operate smoothly and effectively. These policies are designed to ensure responsible use of materials, equitable access for all students, and a respectful, organized learning environment. By working together and following these procedures, we support a library program that serves our entire school community with care and integrity.

Student Check-Out

Students in Preschool & Kindergarten may check out 1 book each week.
Students in grade 1 and up may check out 2 books at a time.
Students in grade 6 and up may check out as many books as needed.

If students need to check out materials for a class project, it does not count towards their regular book checkout.

*If students are unable to check out books during their scheduled ICT time, they may come anytime before or after school to check out, return, or renew books. Students may also visit the library during the day with permission from their classroom teacher.

Book Borrow Length of Time

The loan period is 1 week, Materials must be returned to the library - or renewed - each week.
If a book is on a hold for another student or teacher, it may not be renewed and must be returned by the due date.

Overdue Materials

The Library's resources are shared by the entire school community. Remembering materials each week is an important part student's learning responsibility and consequence. It is the student's responsibility to remember to return or renew books each week.

If materials fall into overdue, student accounts are "frozen" - meaning, they are unable to check out materials until all overdue materials are returned or lost book fines are paid. At this time, their account will be clear and they will be able to check out books again.
At this time, Our Lady of the Cross does not charge late fees or fines for overdue books.

Lost or Damaged Materials

If a book is lost or damaged, a letter will be sent home to notify parents or guardians of the lost material. A material replacement will be charged. Remit lost or damaged material fees to Our Lady of the Cross, attn. Ms. Behm.

Book Selection Process

The school library is a welcoming, faith-centered space where students are encouraged to grow intellectually, morally, and spiritually while exploring topics that spark their curiosity and support their development as thoughtful, responsible individuals. As librarian, I guide students toward books that reflect their interests and align with our Catholic values and educational mission, helping them select age-appropriate and enriching materials. Students are trusted to make responsible choices, and I do not routinely monitor individual reading selections unless a student seeks guidance or shares about their reading.

If your child brings home a book they do not enjoy or that you feel is not appropriate, please have it returned the next school day so another selection may be made. Occasional missteps in book choice are a natural part of learning and provide valuable opportunities for discernment, communication, and growth, and I appreciate our partnership with families in fostering a love of reading rooted in both academic excellence and our shared Catholic faith.
