As we face the impact of our changing world, we are feeling the urgency of supporting our students with the ideas, knowledge, and tools to create a better life now and into the future. To this end Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is launching a new district project, Our Changing Planet, Our Changing Community, facilitated by AUSD teachers Constance Moore and Lindsey Shepard in collaboration with consultants Trena Noval and Indi McCasey.
This project will focus on integrated teaching and learning strategies that help classroom teachers to develop practices of ongoing study for students that address environmental awareness and advocacy. The goal of this project is to deepen teachers' and students’ curiosity about the ecosystems both biological and social of their own communities and the larger world, and to use their creative ingenuity to find just solutions. We will dig into best practices that can help learners to understand the impacts of climate change through exploring social issues, environmental issues, and interdisciplinary content opportunities that can deepen teaching and learning with a local, community based lens.
We launched this project in the fall of 2019 with teachers leaders from the following school sites who will inform and develop this program as a statewide model for environmental literacy, social justice and creativity: Bay Farm Elementary, Love Elementary, Maya Lin School, Otis Elementary, Paden Elementary, Ruby Bridges Elementary, Edison Elementary and Wood Middle School.

How can creative inquiry help us to better understand our world and advocate for just climate solutions?
Self: What do I need to know and do in order to help my community better care for our local environment?
Community: How do we act locally and nationally to advocate for the quality environment for all members of our community?
Society: How can we become knowledgeable citizens and creative problem solvers so that they can inspire positive changes for the good of our planet?
