Olivier Messiaen's Première communion de la vierge, No. 11 from Vingt Regards sur l'enfant-Jésus
Messiaen writes: “the Blessed Virgin is shown kneeling, bent forward in the night — a luminous halo surrounds her form. Her eyes shut, she worships the fruit hidden within herself”.
This piece depicts the Virgin’s First Communion, beginning with a contemplative Theme of God followed by an enthusiastic outburst, where pulsations in the low register represent the heart of the Child beating within his mother’s breast.
