Regional Director, East and Southern Africa at FHI 360

Dr. Otto Nzapfurundi Chabikuli is a family physician and health systems and policy analyst with more than 29 years of experience in clinical work, teaching, research and management in the public, private and nongovernmental health sectors. Dr. Chabikuli currently serves as Regional Director of FHI 360’s work in East and Southern Africa. In this capacity, he provided oversight and leadership of the technical, financial and administrative management of the entire regional portfolio as well as strategy, business development, and managing client relationships. Dr. Chabikuli leads a team of over 900 seasoned professionals that implement a sizeable portfolio of FHI 360’s public health programs in 18 African countries. 

Dr Chabikuli's most immediate past assignment was as  Global Director of FHI 360’s Global Health, Population and Nutrition (GHPN) Business Unit where he oversaw global research and technical work across a broad range of health, population and nutrition areas. Departments under his direction included Infectious Diseases and Health Systems; Maternal, Child Health and Nutrition; Global Health and Population Research; Product Development and Innovations; and Science Facilitation (clinical research). 

Prior to this, Dr. Chabikuli was the Regional Technical Director for Africa, and before that, Country Director/Chief of Party for the FHI 360-led Global HIV/AIDS Initiative Nigeria (GHAIN) where he was responsible for the management, programmatic, technical and strategic vision for the country portfolio. FHI 360 Nigeria had the largest and most diverse country portfolio in FHI 360. GHAIN was the single largest PEPFAR-funded program in the world, with a $418 million funding ceiling at the time.

Prior to joining FHI 360, Dr. Chabikuli was Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Pretoria, Director for the Centre for Health Policy at Wits University’s School of Public Health, and District Health Systems Development Facilitator with the Health Systems Trust in South Africa.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr. Chabikuli obtained his medical degree and a master’s degree in family medicine from the Medical University of Southern Africa, and a Master of Sciences in Health Systems Management from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is a member of several professional associations and held teaching appointments as Adjunct/Honorary Associate Professor at Howard University in Washington, DC, Medical University of Southern Africa, Universite Protestante du Congo in Kinshasa, Universite Catholique La Sapientia in Goma, and the Walter Sisulu University in South Africa. 

Dr. Chabikuli speaks basic Setswana and is fluent in English, French and Swahili.
