Why join Music for Children – Carl Orff Canada – Musique pour enfants?

Almost 1000 people across Canada are members of Carl Orff Canada: Music specialists, classroom teachers, early childhood educators, dance teachers and parents are just a sampling of the people who have seen the benefits of becoming involved with Orff Schulwerk and Carl Orff Canada.

By becoming a member of Music for Children - Carl Orff Canada - Musique pour infants, you are becoming involved in an organization which promotes collegial sharing and quality musical education for children. Advocacy efforts at the national and local levels are ongoing, and assist you in your efforts to provide Orff programs of high calibre. Professional development opportunities are available in the form of workshops, journals, newsletters, courses and conferences.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

Your membership in Music for Children - Carl Orff Canada is valid for one year from the date that your membership is received. Yearly memberships entitles you to:

  • A regular newsletter delivered to your inbox that includes a lesson plan or article and video. (The newsletter is generally done monthly, although sometimes every other month.)

  • Three issues a year of the national Orff journal produced by Carl Orff Canada, OSTINATO, delivered to your inbox, plus access to all previous issues of the journal online.

  • Significantly reduced workshop fees: The fee for a full day workshop for members is only $40.

  • 1 workshop, usually held in February or March, that is either free or half price (depending on the workshop).

  • Access to online videos of workshops and workshop notes (even for workshops not attended) through the members only section of both the Ottawa Orff Chapter website and the Carl Orff Canada websites.

  • Reduced registration rate at Canadian Orff Conferences (which are held biannually) AND American Orff Conferences (offered by the AOSA – American Orff Schulwerk Assocation, which are held annually).

  • Ability to apply for scholarships offered by the Ottawa Orff Chapter AND by Carl Orff Canada: Gunild Keetman Scholarship, Carolyn McMillan Research Grant. Laura Shaw Memorial Scholarship.

Gunild Keetman Scholarship

This scholarship is available to be used towards an approved Orff Schulwerk course offered in Canada. Applicants must have completed a Level I Orff course in order to apply.

Application Deadline: April 15

Carolyn McMillan Research Grant

This $500 grant is offered to encourage research relating to the application and study of Orff Schulwerk in Canada. Applicants must have completed Level III Orff in order to apply. Projects may be broad-based and may include such topics as:

  • the integration of the Orff approach in music therapy, private teaching, geriatrics, palliative care, etc.

  • pilot projects for the music education major or the practising teacher

  • practical applications for the classroom

  • a descriptive and evaluative annotation of bibliographic resources on Orff philosophy and/or Orff materials

Laura Shaw Memorial Scholarship

The Laura Shaw Memorial Scholarship was established by the Ottawa Orff Chapter in 1992 to honour Laura Shaw, a well-known Ottawa music educator and Charter member of the Ottawa Orff Chapter. She was a strong proponent of the value of the Orff approach to Music education. The aim of the scholarship is to encourage our local members to register for Orff courses offered in Canada.

One award may be given annually to a successful candidate, as determined by the Selection Committee

The award cannot be received in conjunction with other scholarships or grants offered through the National Executive of Music for Children – Carl Orff Canada – Musique pour Enfants.

The scholarship will be in the amount of $250 and will be applied toward the tuition of the course.

Applicants must be a current member of the Ottawa Orff Chapter, and have held membership in the Chapter for at least one year at the time of application.

Applicants must have already successfully registered for the Levels Course at the time of application.
