What you'll do

Practical introduction to the fun and exciting activity of ice fishing. Guests will get a practical mini-course into how to start ice fishing safety and enjoyably. This mini-course/bootcamp/ice fishing outing will cover the following.

- How to prepare for ice fishing.

- Important safety precautions that should be taken.

- What is the minimum gear you will need and how to use it.

- How to find safe and productive locations to ice fish.

- How to analyze topographic maps to find potential fish holding locations.

- Recommended lures and baits to use.

- Jigging and dead-stick techniques.

- Fish species to target and how to find bodies of water with those species.

- What to do when the bite is slow and how to know when it is time to change spots.

- How to stay warm and comfy while ice fishing in colder weather.

- Rules and regulations that need to be followed while ice fishing.

Each ice fishing "bootcamp" course lasts for four hours. We meet up at a local river or lake within 40 minutes drive of Kanata, Ontario. I will supply all the gear and bait but guests between 18 and 64 need to ensure they have a valid Ontario fishing license. This is practical course where guests will learn by getting the chance to actively perform all typical tasks under direct supervision and guidance. Ice fishing is a great family activity and this a great way to get introduced to it.

What's included

Ice fishing auger, shelter, rods, lures, bait, heated tent and safety spud. I also will use two underwater cameras to show you the structure and fish under the ice and will record special underwater footage and send it to you afterward to cherish.

What do I need to bring

- Dress in multiple layers in very warm clothing, toques, gloves, scarfs, etc.

- Please make sure to wear multiple pairs of socks and put in hand warmers in between your socks near your toes to keep your feet warm.

- Waterproof snow/rain boots for each participant. I expect there might be a small layer of water on top of the ice and so knee length waterproof boots are highly recommended.

- Waterproof pants or snow pants if possible.

- Comfortable folding chair to sit on (I do have a few extra but not enough for everyone)

- Plastic bag if you would like to take fish home.

- Your welcome to bring/wear a mask for safety. I am double vaccinated and boosted but the new variant is highly contagious and so any extra precautions you wish to take are welcome but not required.

- Water, coffee, tea or another snacks you might like to enjoy in the tent.

- Sunglasses if you have them (sun glare on the ice can be quite strong)

- If you have snow shoes, they would be helpful to make walking to the location easier.

Any adults between 18 and 64 will need an Ontario fishing license. If you don't have one you can buy one online at:

Canadian residents: https://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing-licence-canadian-residents

Non Canadian residents: https://www.ontario.ca/page/fishing-licence-non-residents-canada

Please note that if you plan to fish for a single day only, you do not need an Outdoors Card but you will need a one-day sport fishing license.

Meet your host, Sherif

I have been in love with fishing since I was very young. I love everything about it from buying fishing equipment to discovering new places to fish to the thrill of actually catching fish. I also love to teach others how to enjoy this great sport. Since high school I have always been passionate about sharing my knowledge with others and the only thing that makes me happier than fishing is helping others learn and enjoy this great activity. I can talk for hours about fishing and never get bored and I hope some of that will rub off on my guests. If you want learn more about me feel free to check out my YouTube channel “Selfie Fishing Adventures”.
