Common Sizes of Backyard Pools
While in-ground swimming pool sizes can vary from 3 meters by 3 metres to 12 meters (40ft) in length, there are certain dimensions of swimming pools that are more common in backyards.
A pool with a rectangular form should be sized at 2:1 in order to look attractive. Freeform or custom pools will have the right measurements to match the space.
The following in-ground pool sizes will suit most properties of average size. They also provide enough room to accommodate the entire family.
3 x6m - Ideal for families with smaller children who want to cool down and splash around.
5 x10 m - Can hold more people at the same time and provides space for exercise or ball games.
6 x12 m - This is great for larger families and those who wish to do some water exercise, such as swimming laps.
These compact pools are also known as cocktail pool and plunge pool . They are smaller than regular swimming pools and have edges that are no more than 3 to 4 meters in length.
While lap pools can span up to 12 meters, they are often only 2 or 3 meters long because they are used primarily for swimming.
Remember that the larger your pool is, the more it will cost and the more maintenance you will need. You will need to take into account whether you are looking to preserve your garden, patio space, or outdoor eating area when you decide on the size of your new pool.
Popular In-Ground Pool Shapes
There are many shapes for in-ground pools. They can range from the classic rectangular-based design to striking custom shapes.
You should consider the following things when designing your pool: Do you want to maximize the area or do you prefer a shape which creates a patio around your pool?
The following are popular inground pool shapes:
Rectangular- An easy and useful shape that can be used for both games and swimming. Linear pools complement formal gardens and can be dressed up by adding water features.
Roman - A rectangle that has an arch or curve at the one or both of its ends. Classic twist to soften the geometric lines.
Square - These are usually reserved for cocktail or plunge pools. This is a great choice for small gardens, where the pool will be more of a statement than practical.
Oval and round - These shapes have a lot of design appeal. Although they are not the best for lap swimming, they make great spaces for socializing or playing.
Kidney – A kidney is a rectangular shape with an indented on one side. This creates a natural space for a patio. Their natural shape blends well with most gardens and is very popular.
L-Shaped-This shape is perfect for multi-purpose pools. The pool at the end of the L can have a deeper depth for lap swimming, while the area at the bottom can be used as a tanning or play area.
Lap – Long, narrow pools for long swimming. Lap pools are great for narrow lots. You can make this shape more interesting by adding water walls, decorative tile or spouts.
Freeform – This style is characterized by a lot of curves at its edges. It gives it an organic look. This style can be modified to fit within the garden and incorporate natural or synthetic rocks for a backyard oasis.
Custom - These pools are often in a certain shape and different from freeform. For example, a rock star might have a pool shaped like a guitar. Although custom pools can be more costly and take longer to produce, they are still unique.

How can I determine which size and shape pool is right for me?
There are many factors that influence the shape and size of your backyard pool.
Backyard Space
How much space in your garden can you allot for a swimming pool?
Do you wish to keep space for a deck or dining area, or a garden?
Do you prefer a pool near your home or in your garden? Straight edges will look better next to your walls.
Budget
Because of the extra groundwork, finishing materials and labour involved in installing larger pools and other unusual shapes, they will be more costly to install.
Concrete pools are more costly than vinyl, but require less upkeep and last longer than vinyl lines.
Planned use
Is the pool meant for lap swimming, games, relaxation, or as a centrepiece in your garden?
Who will be using the pool the most? Consider accessibility concerns when designing your pool.
To help you decide the ideal size, shape, depth, and location of your pool, a pool design company will meet with you.
