what fueled the lavender scare
The animus toward gay people during the "lavender scare" of the 1950's has roots back to England in 1533. This exhibit includes artifacts from events that fueled the government's and law enforcement's hunting of gay people through the 1960's and beyond. Of course, thousands of gay men and woman have always been employed by the government in civilian, military, and law enforcement capacities. Over the period of 1930 through the end of "don't ask, don't tell" the government spent millions of tax payer dollars hunting down and terminating the employment of gay people. The result was many ruined lives and, for many, suicide. The FBI recorded over 330,000 pages of files on gay people and gay organizations.Â
