Old examples of the world map. It's always had a similar shape, with the three distinct kingdoms. The locations, size, and name of these places has changed though. And maybe we will still end up visiting some of them!
Initial designs for the tavern had it actually located inside of the tree! The idea was a very unique location for a tavern, but there were some in universe logistical issues. But the red door still remains to this day.
Some of the interior spaces of the old tavern. It would eventually be changed due to issues with spacing. The tavern felt way too small, as well as the living space above.
Old (and I mean really old) reference sheets for some main characters! You can definitely see change and improvement in art style, and the numbers were originally for identifying the colors on my early drawing program for consistency
Testing with colors! Since the original issues of "The Legendary Tail" were on pencil and paper, originally it was to have color. But due to time and quality issues, it ended up being only pencil.
Lots of different outfits for Clair and Max. One key thing I kept in mind was keeping the designs simple, making them easier to draw, but still wanted them to be unique. They would really only get new outfits based on different arcs/stories. I eventually moved to an overall more colorful look for both of them.
A title is important! One of the first things you see when you pick up a comic. So I wanted something bold, yet elegant when it came to the title font. Pretty quickly, I came to enjoy the block letters with the pointed edges, and its still sticking today!
A different title? Yes indeed! Originally going by the name "Land of Legends," this would be changed due to a similarity with the title of a similar game. Furthermore, the series shifted away from being about meeting and traveling to legendary places and people, and focused more on Clair.
A setting that eventually faded away, Clair and Max were going to turn an old fort lost in the forest into their own hideout. Clair was going to find a secret chamber and unleash the power of the Dragon Staff! Although I liked the location, eventually it didn't make much sense for Clair to seemingly not know about a whole fort in the woods...
I started to think about what the cities buildings outside of the forest would look like. Here is another tavern (left) and more elaborate mansion (right). Thinking about a sort of renaissance, medieval, Victorian abomination for the architectural style. While I still think this look is somewhat appropriate, I've begun to think about a more independent and more striking and unique visual style for each city.
An earlier concept for Max. I mess around with a lot of hair styles and outfits for him, a lot more than the other characters. I wasn't really sure about how to get him to look, but it was supposed to be more messy and make shift.
An older drawing for Ryan. I always wanted him to have a large hooded coat and sword on his back. And a killer beard had to round out the look. Give him a rough and rugged look. One of the biggest things that changed was his hair and face giving him a more old and tired look to match the rest.
A drawing of the Sorcerer. Another character that went through lots of outfit ideas. Originally, he would wear a long trench coat either open or closed. Eventually, I wanted him to look more like a washed up magician, leading to the cape and vest combo he sports now.
Some very old drawing of Clair. More than anything, this shows how long I've been trying to draw a coherant looking character. But over look of the character has been around for a long time. The patterning and color was meant to resemble that of an orange striped cat. It was also somewhat inspired by the webcomic "Twokinds," by Tom Fischbach. However, unlike Flora, Clair is more of a common cat than a tiger.
Older versions of the story would have had more grand locations explored in the forest. Old forts, crumbling towers, and hideouts would make for other set pieces that would see some traffic. These places, like some of the ruins seen in the actual comic, would have treasures to unlock and explore. Moving around all these spaces and mapping them out became somewhat difficult, and they felt too simple, so the got changed out.
