Eligibility to Join
All students admitted to the school are eligible to be on the team and play as long as they meet Division 1A Academic Requirements. All new and current players have the opportunity to play for our first XV side depending on their skill level. Starting players vary throughout the year as we maintain that the team is competitive within itself. We receive a slew of players who have never played rugby before and still see them excel at the sport. Playing rugby prior to joining is not a requirement and with 15 players on the field at a time there are positions for players of all sizes.
About the Team
The Oswego State Men’s Rugby Club has been playing since being established in 1970. The team has continuously progressed and grown from playing Division III competition to now having participated in its first Division 1A conference season. We had won 3 Division II Upstate Conference Rugby Championships in our final four years in Division II(2014-2017) providing us entry into the D1A Liberty Conference. The Oswego Men's Rugby Club maintains a vast and supportive alumni network to become apart of.
Practice & Season
Weekly we practice Monday to Friday from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Hidden Fields on West Campus. Each practice is open for new members to attend with no requirements. Every practice we run a number of drills that vary in their focus depending on what we must improve on and how we can best prepare for our upcoming opponents. Tackling at practice varies as we either incorporate non-contact/touch rugby drills, mild-contact wrap, or full-contact drills throughout the week. We typically scrimmage ourselves in full 15s form and in other smaller scales. During the Spring semester, we move practice indoors until the weather becomes manageable again to move back to our normal practice schedule. We participate in and travel to various Division 1A 7s tournaments and scrimmages during the spring semester, also holding our own rugby tournament at the end of the semester. We meet with alumni yearly competing against them at our home Spring tournament and later in the year to enjoy a weekend alongside them at the expansive Can-Am Rugby Tournament in Lake Placid. Many of our players play for other Men’s Rugby teams throughout New York and other states for the summer and often meet to play alongside each other as well. We record film for both A side and B side games as well as a slew of photography on the field or in the studio.
Being a Part of the Team
It is important to us that each player on the team has a voice on and off the field. We push that each player stays on top of their classes, diet, and fitness by providing them with the necessary resources to do so while also giving each player enough time to enjoy themselves. We are mostly a player-run organization; we offer a slew of administrative & leadership positions on the team.
